MEDIA RELEASE: Newcastle Community Groups Encouraged to Pitch for Share of $150,000 Grants Pool

Sharon Claydon MP has encouraged Newcastle community groups to consider putting in an Expression of Interest for a chance of securing up to $20,000 in funding for small capital projects.

Ms Claydon said there is a total funding pool of up to $150,000 in the 2018 Newcastle Stronger Communities Grants program to support projects which improve local community participation.

“Grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 will be available for projects with matched contributions, in-cash or in-kind, on at least a dollar-for-dollar basis,” Ms Claydon said.

“It can be difficult for community-based not-for-profit organisations to raise funds for upgrades. These grants are a great way to get small projects that will contribute to the strength and vibrancy of our community.

“Whether it’s an upgrade to current facilities, new seating or equipment at a sports ground, improvements for disability access or a fit-out of a community centre, there’s a wide range of projects that could be eligible under this program. I encourage all eligible groups to lodge applications for projects that will help build a strong and healthy community.”

Local community-based not-for-profit organisations and local governing bodies are eligible to apply for funding.

In the 2017 round:

  • Oz Harvest Newcastle received $4,301 to upgrade its food van.
  • Nova for Women and Children received $20,000 for a children’s playground and kitchen upgrade at an emergency shelter for women and children fleeing family violence.
  • Bluegum Hills Men’s Shed received $19,000 to erect sheds, lay asphalt and install a rainwater tank.
  • Newcastle Art Space at Tighes Hill received $13,376 to upgrade facilities.
  • ConnectAbility Australia received $5,000 for a new community garden in Hamilton.
  • Newcastle Youth Orchestra received $6,800 to purchase new musical instruments.
  • Stockton Bowling Club received $3,000 to provide shade at community events.

Expressions of Interest close on 7 September. Applications will be assessed by a committee of Novocastrians with strong connections to the community.
